New benchmarks reveal where industries create the greatest social and environmental impacts – enabling policymakers to strengthen framework conditions and businesses to enhance their sustainability strategies.
The reports by the WifOR Institute and the Value Balancing Alliance provide valuable insights for decision-makers by covering:
- Country Benchmarks, based on the NACE classification, covering 18 industries across 20 national economies.
- Sector Benchmarks, classified according to SICS®, spanning 11 sectors worldwide.
How the Benchmarks Work in Practice
The benchmarks are expressed as Impact Intensities, representing the average social and environmental footprint of industries in different countries relative to their revenue. Using WifOR Institute’s Value Factors, these impacts are quantified in monetary terms (EUR of impact per EUR of revenue). This standardization enables businesses to integrate societal impact into their decision-making and pinpoint areas for improvement.
Use Cases:
- Impact Assessments: Investors and organizations can approximate the environmental or social impact of a company, investee, or project when specific impact data is unavailable by multiplying the Impact Intensity by the revenue.
- Benchmarking: Organizations with existing impact data can compare their performance against these benchmarks by calculating their own Impact Intensity (impact divided by output).
- Policy Making: Policymakers can utilize this information to compare impacts across different industries and impact drivers. This comparison supports the prioritization of sustainability measures and the establishment of targets to address key areas of concern.
